The Best Bed for an Older Dog Is Firmer Than You Think
Share
When a dog gets older, the instinct is to give them the softest, fluffiest bed you can find. For many senior dogs that's the wrong choice — not because soft is bad, but because sinking into a bed makes getting back out of it harder.
Why firm beats plush for stiff joints
An older dog with stiff hips or elbows needs something to push against when standing up. On a deep, squashy bed their legs sink and have nothing solid underneath, so they struggle and sometimes give up and stay put. A firm, even surface supports their weight and gives them a stable base to stand from.
What to look for
- A firm, supportive base that doesn't flatten to nothing when your dog lies on it.
- A low entry. A tall bolster all the way around turns every bedtime into a step up. Look for at least one low side.
- A non-slip bottom, especially on hard floors, so the bed doesn't slide as they climb in.
- A washable cover. Senior dogs are more likely to have the occasional accident.
- The right size: big enough to stretch out fully, since many older dogs lie flat rather than curled.
Warmth helps too
Many older dogs seek out warm spots — a patch of sun, a heating vent, your side of the sofa. A gentle heat source under their bedding can make a cold floor far more comfortable. Use a pet-specific pad with temperature control, keep it on a low setting, and make sure your dog can always move off the warm area if they get too hot.
Where the bed goes matters
Put the bed somewhere draft-free, away from stairs, and ideally where your dog can still see you. Older dogs often become more attached to being near their people, and a bed tucked away in a cold corner may just go unused.
We don't sell orthopedic beds yet, so we'll only point you to what we have: the Waterproof Pet Heating Pad has adjustable temperature and power-off protection, and works under a firm bed you already own. If your dog is suddenly reluctant to get up, lie down, or climb stairs, mention it to your vet — stiffness is common with age, but it's worth checking.
